Non-Degree Seeking Students

Non-Degree Applicants typically fall under one of the following categories:

  1. Students who need to complete pre-requisites for another program and are currently not enrolled in a degree seeking program at FIU.
  2. Students who want to take a few courses at FIU but not obtain a Bachelor's and/or Master's degree.
  3. Students who are visiting from Private Colleges or Out-of-State Schools (not on official student exchange).
  4. Persons 60 years of age or older who meet Florida residency requirements and who attended classes in a state university.

Application Process

Non-degree seeking students must adhere to the University's application deadlines. For the Spring 2017 semester, the last day to apply as a non-degree seeking student is January 13, 2017.

Please note: students seeking a degree at a public institution of higher education in Florida should fill out the Transient Student Application online instead of the Non-Degree Seeking Application. Senior citizens should review the information provided by the FIU OneStop and complete the forms provided on that web page instead of the Non-Degree Seeking Application.

Attention: Previously Enrolled Non-Degree seeking students remain active for 3 consecutive terms.

Example: If you were last enrolled in Summer 2015, then:

  1. Inactive for 2 terms (Fall 2015, Spring 2016) and want to enroll as Non-Degree Seeking for Summer 2016: You are still active and eligible to enroll; DO NOT submit a new application. Check the academic calendar for enrollment dates.

  2. Inactive for 3 terms (Fall 2015, Spring 2016, Summer 2016) and want to enroll as Non-Degree Seeking for Fall 2016: You are discontinued and must submit new application + fee.

Step 1: Non-Degree Seeking Student Application:

Complete the online Non-Degree Seeking Student Application. There is a $30 non-refundable application fee. You will be asked to pay the application fee of $30.00 online using a major credit card (Master Card, American Express, Discover, or Visa) or you may pay the application fee by using a personal check or money order in US dollars. Please be mindful that no application will be considered until the application fee is paid.

Step 2: Florida Residency Information:

In order to qualify for the in-state tuition rate, you or your parent/legal guardian must be a U.S. citizen, Permanent Resident Alien (with a Green Card), or a legal alien granted indefinite stay by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). Two forms of proof must accompany your application.

Step 3: Health/Immunization Requirements:

As a prerequisite to registration, FIU requires all students born after January 1, 1957 to present documented proof of immunity to MMR. Prior to registration, all students who matriculated after July 1, 2008 are required to show proof of immunity for Hepatitis B. This vaccine is strongly recommended but not mandatory. Prior to registration, all students who matriculated after July 1, 2008 are required to show proof of vaccination for Meningitis. This vaccine is strongly recommended, particularly for students living on campus, but not mandatory.
