Prospective Students: Graduate Certificates

 
Certificate in Homeland Security & Emergency Management - Overview*

The Graduate Certificate in Homeland Security & Emergency Management is designed to provide critical analytic skills to “first-responders” and those in related fields. The certificate will help professionals navigate a complex intergovernmental policy framework with an eye to best practice allocation of scarce local and regional resources devoted to preventing or mitigating the potential impacts of natural and manmade perils. Coursework will focus on the roles and responsibilities of public, nonprofit, and private organizations in the context of South Florida’s vulnerable operating environment.

Unique to the FIU Broward Pines Center, the Graduate Certificate in Homeland Securtiy & Emergency Management can be completed in 12 to 15 months depending upon the semester in which you begin the certificate. Program highlights include class registration, meals during class meetings, accelerated course delivery, and streamlined administrative services. Classes will meet Friday evenings from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., and on Saturday mornings from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. minimizing career interruption.

Graduate Certificate in Community Development - Overview*

The Graduate Certificate in Community Development is intended to provide critical tools and analytic frameworks useful to local decision-makers responsible for developing and managing sustainable, high-wage communities in an increasingly competitive world economy. Course material will address the critical drivers of local and regional development in the context of South Florida’s “gateway” status for commerce and immigration. Content will address spatial, managerial, and social components of development.

Admission & Application

Applicants must hold a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university and have an upper-division GPA of at least 2.75. Students must be admitted to the certificate program. Admission to a certificate program does not constitute admission to the master’s degree in Public Administration (MPA) program.

All applicants must complete the Graduate Admissions application available online at http://gradschool.fiu.edu, submit a $30 application fee, and send official transcripts to the Graduate Admissions Office.

Note: Those students who apply for and are admitted to the Master of Public Administration degree program may have certificate courses credited toward the MPA degree provided each course has a grade of B or higher and the student is admitted to the master’s degree program prior to the completion of no more than 12 graduate certificate credits.


Tuition & Fees*

Tuition and fees for either gradute certificate program include the following:

  • In-state Graduate Tuition (Florida resident): $1,022.04 (per 3 credit course)
  • Out-of-state Graduate Tuition (non-resident): $2,534.28 (per 3 credit course)
  • Program fee: $299 per course
  • Photo ID fee: $10.00 (annual fee)
  • Athletic Fee: $10 (per semester)
  • Parking Access fee: $82.39 (per semester)
